Midweek Musings with Janelle

I recently read The Ruthless Elimination of Hurry by John Mark Comer, and it has been a much needed wake up call for me. It is one of those books that challenges you so much that you get a little bit angry with the author for writing it (or maybe that’s just me).

The main verse that Comer bases his book on is Matthew 11:28-30 which says, “Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for you souls. For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.”

Every time I hear/read that verse it brings seemingly instant peace to my soul. It’s like a deep breath, a hug, and a nap all in three sweet verses. Comer highlights the fact that the speed of life in this day and age can make it downright impossible to live a life that is marked by the spiritual disciplines and even simple rest.

One way to determine how hurried your life has become is by looking at how you handle interruptions. When I did that, I wasn’t happy with what I saw. It seems like my days at work are rife with interruptions, and I don’t always handle them graciously. I am sure you do a much better job at handling interruptions than I do, but it’s hard for me. I find myself thinking about my list of things that I need to get done, and that issue or task was not on my list today.

But. Is that the example that Jesus set in his life here on earth? Is that showing true gentleness and humility in heart? Nope.

So, this has become my prayer this week. That I might deal with the interruptions of life with a gentle and humble heart, and I pray that we can all do the same.

So. I will leave you all with this verse again, as you go about your week, because it’s what I need to hear, and maybe you need to hear it, too.

“Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls.  For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.”
